Eco Somatics

What is Eco Somatics?

For most of human history our ancestors lived with a felt understanding that the world around them was alive and full of presence, spirit, relationship and intelligence. We were not separate from nature but part of a larger living community of waters, trees, animals, land and elements. This was not simply a theory or philosophy but a way of experiencing and relating to the more than human world as our kin or relatives. Indigenous cultures around the world continue to carry and embody this understanding through cultural teachings, practices, ceremony and relationship.

At its heart Eco Somatics is an acknowledgement of belonging: that we are part of a living web of relationship, where reciprocity, gratitude and attentive listening matter. Eco Somatics is a growing field and practice that invites us into this remembering through the body - sensing, moving, listening and opening to our relationship with the living world around us. Somatics recognizes the body as a source of wisdom and innate intelligence from which we can orient our lives. Deep ecology is a philosophy that understands our interconnectedness with all of life, and the intrinsic value and consciousness that exists in the wider ecology.

Eco-Somatics acknowledges the way we understand and practice our connection to the animate world is through our bodies. Through this connection we can remember our purpose. It addresses a primal wound in modern culture, the belief that we are separate from nature and a disconnection from our bodies. This mind-body split is a major cause of human dis-ease and environmental crisis. Through embodied practice this approach offers a way of coming home to ourselves and to our living, breathing, conscious, cosmic earth, This is deeply restorative for us and for the earth herself.
